Why compare sectors?

Some checklists suit some industries better than others. Software and consumer brands often clear the Buffett-inspired margin and return tests because they need little capital, while banks and utilities rarely do: banks don't report a gross margin at all, and utilities carry a lot of debt by design. Looking at a sector as a whole shows whether a stock's score is unusual for its industry or typical of it.

The ring on each card is the share of all tests passed by every stock in the sector, counted together. It is a summary of the group, not a rating of any one company.
